The Lesser Redoubt

  1. THE LESSER REDOUBT - A black ink and gray color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the book, "The Dream of X," by William Hope Hodgson, published by Grant in 1977. This drawing also appears in the new collection of Hodgson stories titled, "Masters of the Weird Tale: Hodgson," published by Centipede Press in 2009.

One of the challenges I had to deal with in this book, was in creating the right feeling for each scene that I decided to illustrate. No matter how unusual a scene, it has to look convincing, and since I was creating these drawings strictly from my imagination, they were not likely to look convincing unless I had some vivid images in my mind regarding the landscapes, and making the effort to draw them carefully into a unified set.

One of the scenes I chose to illustrate was this one, when the man called "X," after a long and hazardous journey across half the Earth, finally sees the "Lesser Redoubt" in which his great love, Naana resides. My intention here was to give the reader a sense of the long journey that has transpired, and the enormity of the challenge he still faces to get to the Lesser Redoubt. To do that I made him very small in size and placed him deep into the landscape.
